Former Aigio Paper Mill

2021

Aigio

ILIDA

The former Aigio Paper Mill, one of Greece's most significant industrial heritage sites, is being redeveloped into a contemporary complex accommodating cultural, administrative and recreational uses.

Our office was responsible for the Structural Assessment, Structural Analysis, and Structural Design of the rehabilitation and strengthening interventions for the principal buildings of the complex. The study focused on evaluating the existing structures, designing the required strengthening measures, and ensuring full compliance with current seismic design standards while respecting the historic fabric of the buildings.

The structural scope included:

Former Boiler House: Structural rehabilitation and strengthening for its conversion into an exhibition space, museum, Municipal Council Chamber and amphitheatre.
Former Workshops & Machine Shop: Structural strengthening of the existing load-bearing system and mezzanine to safely accommodate new restaurant and leisure facilities.
Former Cutting Machine Building: Structural design for the new building uses, including the rehabilitation and complete structural redesign of the historic timber roof and skylight, preserving the original geometry while meeting modern structural performance requirements.

The structural interventions were designed to be as discreet as possible, preserving the architectural and historical character of the industrial complex while ensuring its long-term safety, resilience and functionality.
